How You Can Help

Please help Brighton and Hove FareShare give more people a fresh start everyday. There are several ways to help:

Volunteer with Brighton and Hove FareShare

Brighton and Hove FareShare relies on the generous support of over 50 volunteers to help run and manage the project. We provide valuable training opportunities in food hygiene, manual handling and lifting, driving, delivering and other vocational courses.

What do Brighton and Hove FareShare volunteers do?

  • Drivers collect and deliver donated food to projects for homeless people. They carry out very basic checks on the FareShare van. They also help to plan routes and deliveries.
  • Navigators compile schedules for the shift and direct drivers to delivery and collection points. They are also responsible for ensuring that paperwork is completed at each stop.
  • Sorters ensure that food is of an acceptable quality for redistribution. The food is also counted and catagorized.
  • Office volunteers assist with the administrative tasks in the FareShare office. These include answering telephones and dealing with general enquiries, data entry for collections and deliveries and organising mail outs.

What does Brighton and Hove FareShare offer me as a volunteer?

  • The chance to give practical help to improve the diet of homeless people.
  • Full training
  • Reimbursement of travel expenses

What experience do I need?

  • No experience is required as all volunteers are given training in food hygiene.
  • Drivers all need to have a clean driving licence.

What commitment do I have to make?

  • You will need to be able to commit yourself to at least one shift per week.
  • Commitment to equal opportunities, adherence to the corporate policies of FareShare and recognition of the need for confidentiality are all essential.
  • Be able to follow procedures, especially relating to food hygiene.

How do I volunteer?

Donate surplus food to Brighton and Hove FareShare

FareShare collects quality surplus food from wholesale retailers, caterers and manufacturers, then deliver it to projects that are registered with FareShare and meet acceptable standards.

We accept all kinds of food, which are fresh, ambient and frozen. FareShare works with all companies and will consider all products based on the following criteria:

  • It is of good quality and checked mould, bruising, etc.
  • Within its use-by-date (although it may be past its sell-by-date).
  • Covered or packaged appropriately.
  • Capable of contributing to a significant number of meals.
  • Complies with all the Food Safety legislation including Temperature Control Regulations 1995.

What type of food does FareShare not accept?

  • Shellfish
  • Food that has been held hot
  • Open buffet surplus
  • Food past the marked used-by-date
  • Food more than 24 hours past the "best before" date.

What does FareShare offer your organisation?

  • The opportunity to minimise food waste.
  • The chance to reduce disposal costs.
  • Brand protection
  • Peace of mind that all of our staff and volunteers are trained in food hygiene.
  • An agreed system for contact and collection to suit your organisation.
  • Responsible management of the distribution process.
  • Regular feedback on your donations and their impact for your corporate social responsibility and business reporting.
  • The chance to have greater involvement in your local community.

The FareShare guarantee: Brand Protection

FareShare takes responsibility for the food once it is collected and ensures that it is correctly used. Every organisation that receives food has to satisfy FareShare that it has suitable premises and staff and can fully comply with food hygiene legislation. No food is resold. If the food is not consumed before its best-before date, all identifying labelling is removed and the food is destroyed. FareShare audits projects on a regular basis to ensure that all of the above is happening.

FareShare is independently audited and advised by The Food Hygiene Bureau and Checkmate International (CMI). All FareShare staff are trained in food hygiene.
